Hedgie's Midnight Feast.

I prefer my food on the ground...not having to poke my head into this silly little bowl while trying to balance on the doorstep as well!
Now, let's see if I can tip it up...
Yes, that's much easier to eat!
Oops! I think I heard one of those pesky cats with its caterwauling ....
I'll just take a little nibble on my head for a tasty snack later...Down this way?
No, safer this side, some camouflage coming up...

A wild hedgehog. How cool! We bought our daughter an African pygmy hedgehog many years ago which turned out to be a very bad idea. It was such a mean tempered little devil and would hiss and rattle its spines despite being advertised as hand raised. We let him out in our small townhouse yard which was fenced in but he disappeared one day. About a week later someone said they saw a hedgehog heading toward a nearby park so in spite of being mean tempered I hope he lived a good life. Don't know if it survived the winter though.

Welcome, ki, to our little corner of paradise. Thank you for introducing yourself. Lovely to make your acquaintance.

The hedgehogs make their own nests in our garden by using their spittle to weave long stems of plants like the crocosmia into the shape of half a rugby ball which acts as the roof, with a hollow in the ground as the other half. It is quite fascinating to find them. It means we have to leave the leaves till spring before pruning them and depriving the hedgehogs of their homes :)

Oh just precious!!!

Have you ever heard of Gladys Taber and her books, of living in the CN countryside and on Cape Cod? On Cape Cod, she had a skunk which came for food, like your 'hedgie.' She named him 'Blackberry.' Her writings are quite precious.

If you can't find any copies there, I'd be glad to share with you... Just let me know if you'd like to read them.

How kind of you, smilnsigh, to offer to share her books with me. I have to admit my ignorance of this author's work. Perhaps her work is like that of the vet, who wrote under the name of James Herriot. Thank you kindly.

Hi again, Wildlife Gardener

Wonderful to see photos of hedgehogs at your back door.

Funnily enough, we had midnight hedgehog visitors ourselves last night - I ran for my camera but missed it! I have just linked to your photos for my post 'The hedge and the hedgehog' :-)

Ah well, not all was lost though as it was a dry mild night. I quickly put my video camera out on a tripod and was lucky to catch it/them on film for my post :-)

Welcome, meeyauw, and lovely to meet you. Hedgehogs are great fun to have in the garden. They gobble up the snails and slugs too :)

Hi, shirl, I'm popping over to see them shortly...sounds so exciting :)
